Outside the Mansion
This session began with the player characters still inside the Forshantir's Mysterious Shadow Plane. The party continued their investigation of the outbuildings.
The mansion's grounds are surrounded by a 10-foot wall and contain a number of outbuildings and an orchard. |
The party investigated the large building to the west.
You open the door to what appears to be a barracks. There are a couple weapons and armor racks by the door, but there is only one weapon to be found: a halberd with a gleaming white blade. Over a dozen beds line each wall and appears that there are soldiers sleeping in some of them. In fact, as you open the door, they appear to be waking.
The party comes upon one-time men-at-arms, now turned into spellstiched shadow ghouls. |
The ghouls are almost too much for the player characters. It comes down to Bisquick holding off four of the ghouls, who have run out of scorching rays and fireballs. |
In the end, Bisquick wins through. |
After defeating the spellstiched shadow ghouls, the party moved to the orchard.
You come upon an orchard, with each of the trees bearing large red apples, though wisps of shadow can be seen flitting around the fruit. You hear a soft tune coming from within the orchard. In the middle of the orchard, a creature sits on the stump of a felled tree, playing a set of pipes. The creature is humanoid, with horns on his head and the legs of a goat. Swirling shadow envelopes him. He motions that he sees you, but continues playing his pipes.
After the saytr's song was finished, he introduced himself as Tan. The player characters asked him several questions, but he was not able to offer them very many answers. He stated that he had forgotten his former life and that it had been beyond his memory when the last visitor came to the mansion. Tan did know something of how the Forshantir operated as he did recall fleeing from the shadow slugs. He suggested that the party members eat of the apples of the orchard, that he had lived off of them for as long as he could remember. Fagan was the only character to eat one of the apples, and later was wracked with Shadow Fever. A number of player characters secreted away some of the apples into their bags.
The party meets Tan the Shadow Saytr. |
After speaking with Tan, and learning that he would like to go with the party if they found a way out of the Forshantir, the party set off for the last unexplored outbuilding.
Upon opening the door to this small building, you notice a number of beds oriented in a circle around the middle of the floor. Burned into this part of the floor, there are a series of numbers: "17 14 5 24 1 18 6 6".
A few moments passed as the party thought upon the strange numbers. After some thinking and divining with the great god Google, the party discerned that this was a code for the word, "darkness". Upon uttering the word, the floorboards vanished to reveal a fine box. Inside, resting atop fine padding, was an intricately designed silver key. The party set off to the front of the mansion.
The key fits perfectly into the door of the mansion, and you hear the distinct click of the lock unlocking as you turn it. As the door swings open, a very well decorated entry chamber is revealed. A short human man stands at the opposite end of the room. He has short brown hair, sports a well-groomed goatee, and wears a breastplate scrawled with arcane runes. His hand clutches a sheathed longsword at his side, and he glares at you before turning and exiting the room. As he moves, a lightning fast creatures appears in front of you at the door. It is tall and thin, its pock-marked skin drawn tightly over its bones. It wields a long sword in one hand, and its offhand ends in oversized, sharp claws.
The creature was identified as a carg, one of the vile creatures created by Marco the Enslaver that he used to conquer and enslave the world. It attacked the party and fought with deadly accuracy, with both its sword and claws striking out at the party. The party threw everything they had at the creature, including Fagan's one-use "Full Attack, Mother Fuckers" special ability.
The player characters come face to face against a mighty carg, a creature of the Marco Wars. |
Back in Melanora
After the party defeated the lone carg, they found themselves back in Elanora Silverleaf's residence, just moments after they had left. She asked them for details on what happened, and afterwards she revealed a few things:
- When she tapped the outside of the Forshantir, it was because she noticed some fine lines inside that appeared to be a spherical piece of dirate, similar to Seven Pendants of Dira.
- She identified the white-bladed halberd that they brought back as a +1 carg bane halberd.
- With positive identification from Alan Bree, the man inside the mansion was determined to be Douge Gangei, a one-time Companion of Mygrandin who turned traitor and joined Marco the Enslaver, taking with him several pieces of dirate, which were presumably corrupted. She believes that the pendant physically inside the Forshantir is one of these, but does not understand why the dirate was not simply corrupted.
Elanora stated that she was going to do some independent research on these events and would contact the party at The Disorderly Dwarf if she found anything of interest.
The party left and set about various merchanting tasks, including Bisquick getting his shadow-touched dwarven waraxe enchanted.
The party spent the next couple days on minor pursuits, though the word on the street was that not only was the entire Paladin Council killed in Kandor, but also numerous members of the nobility. Large numbers of commoners had also been killed and battles were still being fought throughout the country.
On March 19th, rumors circulated throughout Melanora about a serf uprising in numerous settlements in Nomandi, including Akentet, Nanbusca, and Sathict. Word was that the Nomandian military was already on the move.
The session ended on March 21st, 1332 with Fagan overcoming his bout of Shadow Fever. The player characters mulled over what to do next.
